The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Reports Positive Changes at Kakhovska HES
The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine has announced positive changes at the Kakhovska HES following a terrorist act in June 2024. Over the past year, the reservoir area has decreased by 91% and the volume of water by 96%. However, thanks to the spring floods of 2024, there has been a partial restoration of the water body.
Research conducted by experts from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine revealed that by October 2023, the reservoir area had shrunk to only 9% of its original size, with the water volume reduced to 3.6% of its initial capacity. In May 2024, due to the rise in water levels in the Dnipro River, the reservoir area expanded by nearly 40% to 860 square kilometers. The volume of water also increased to 2.15 cubic kilometers, equivalent to 11.8% of the original volume.
Scientists have observed that the territory of the former reservoir will undergo seasonal changes, with drying up occurring in the summer and autumn months, and filling with water during the spring and early summer periods.
