Police Suspect Three Doctors in Eye Injection Case

Today, July 11, the deputy chief of the National Police Department in Ternopil region, Andriy Tkachyk, announced suspicions against three doctors in the case involving 22 patients who lost their sight after injections in Chortkiv. The incident occurred on February 16, 2022, when all the victims suddenly lost their sight and felt severe pain and burning in their eyes after receiving injections in the eye at the local hospital. They were immediately hospitalized at the Ternopil Regional Clinical Hospital, where they were diagnosed with acute endophthalmitis and underwent urgent surgeries.

What is Acute Endophthalmitis?

Acute endophthalmitis is a serious purulent inflammation of the internal membranes of the eye with the formation of an abscess in the vitreous body, which occurs as a result of eye damage and infection. Preliminary analyses conducted in Ternopil showed that the infection was caused by E. coli.

According to the latest data, two patients have died, and seven others have had their eyes removed. An investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of this tragic event.
