Latvian border guards encountering suspicious incidents at the border

Latvian border guards have reported encounters with Russian or Belarusian citizens at the border who are suspected to be «military personnel participating in hostilities». These individuals have been attempting to illegally enter Latvia, with their profiles indicating possible involvement in special services. The head of the State Border Guard Service stated that these individuals often provide conflicting information and are not transparent about their intentions, which may include setting fires or causing explosions. They have been detained and escorted out of Latvia.

Additionally, Latvia has recorded attempts to disrupt IT systems on the country’s eastern border and to take control of drones. There are suspicions that minefields could be created along the border with Russia and Belarus in order to limit potential attack routes. This has prompted the Baltic countries to plan the creation of joint defense zones along their borders with Russia.
