Amid protests by farmers, the EU is strengthening its monitoring of the agreements regarding grain imports from Ukraine. This was announced by EU Transport Commissioner Adina Valean, Reuters reports.
«Closing borders is never a good idea, especially borders with a neighbor that is in such need of communication. As long as the agreements are being properly implemented, there should be no problems, and we are working on strengthening compliance,»
Valean noted that the EU must ensure that carriers are not violating the agreement and have the right to transit.
The EU Commissioner highlighted that EU countries also benefit from trading with Ukraine. The export by road from Poland, Romania, and Slovakia has increased by double digits, exceeding the growth of goods entering these countries.
She added that this «shows that border countries also benefit from the advantageous exchange.»
Valean noted that in January of this year, 3 million tons of Ukrainian grain were transited, with 2.04 million tons passing through Romania.
Since the establishment of solidarity corridors in May 2022, Ukraine has exported a total of 64 million tons of grain, oilseeds, and related goods through them.
