The UK Government Embraces Artificial Intelligence for Efficiency

The UK Government is planning to use artificial intelligence to increase the efficiency of the state apparatus. Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden will present new tools aimed at automating routine tasks typically performed by civil servants.

One such tool, called the «red box,» will gather and systematize information from authoritative sources, such as parliamentary protocols. Another tool being considered is capable of responding to public consultations with individualized answers. Dowden claims that artificial intelligence can do the work that would normally take three months and involve 25 civil servants.

The use of artificial intelligence will be limited in areas where a high level of confidentiality is required, such as in data processing or in matters of national security and foreign policy.

In addition, the Cabinet Office’s artificial intelligence department plans to increase its staff from 30 to 70 people and receive a new budget of £110 million (approximately $139.1 million), significantly higher than the previous £5 million (approximately $6.3 million).
