Odessa Communal Services Work to Improve Water Quality in Victory Park

Odessa communal services are working on restoring the natural color of the water in the ponds of Victory Park using algae. This initiative aims to improve the ecological state of water bodies, which currently have an unnatural dirty-reddish hue.

Using Chlorella Algae to Combat Pollution

Acting Director of the Municipal Enterprise «Service Center» Zurab Shonia explained that to combat unwanted pollution in the ponds, a single-celled alga called Chlorella was added. This plant can help return the water to its natural appearance as it activates self-purification processes.

Waiting for Results

«We can already see some changes in the color of the water. However, the final result will only be visible after the temperature rises, and natural processes are activated. We need to wait a little bit,» Shonia explained.

Cleaning Options and Cost Considerations

He noted that an alternative, but much more expensive option would be to drain the water and comprehensively clean the ponds, which would require significant costs. The last time such cleaning was done was eight years ago, using about three hundred leaf vacuum machines. Due to the war and economic situation in the country, such expenses are currently impractical.

Recent Water Quality Concerns

It is worth noting that in March, the water in the ponds acquired an unpleasant shade and a musty smell. However, the fish and turtles living in the water bodies remain healthy. Initial water analysis did not reveal any dangerous changes in its composition.

Continued Efforts for Improvement

Earlier, in 2021, Chlorella and water hyacinth (Eichhornia) were already used to improve water quality in the ponds. Hopefully, these new measures will also have a positive impact on the ecological state of the water bodies in Victory Park.
