Police Uncover Theft Scheme in Zhytomyr Region

Police in Zhytomyr region have uncovered a scheme in which a criminal, who asked to use a phone, instead stole over 60,000 hryvnias. The incident took place in Zhytomyr district on June 5, when a 43-year-old man reported to the police about the disappearance of money from his bank card.

Investigators determined that a 24-year-old acquaintance of the victim was involved in the theft. They had been drinking alcohol together at the victim’s home on May 22, after which the criminal asked the owner for a phone to make a call, but instead accessed his financial apps and made six transactions totaling over 60,000 hryvnias. The money was spent on personal expenses.

The investigation is ongoing, and a criminal case under Article 185 Part 4 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (theft) is being conducted. The punishment for this crime can be up to 8 years of imprisonment.
