Speaker of Parliament and Five Others to Run for President in Iran
The Guardians Council of Iran has approved the candidacy of the Speaker of Parliament and five other individuals to run for the position of president following the death of former leader Ibrahim Raisi. Former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been banned from running again due to actions after the 2009 protests.
One of the most well-known candidates is former mayor of Tehran, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who has ties to the Revolutionary Guard. Support from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei could play a significant role in the election results.
