European Leaders Gather at Blenheim Palace

Today at Blenheim Palace, located in the heart of England, an extraordinary new version of what was once called the «Concert of Europe» will take place. Over 40 European national leaders and key leaders of international institutions will gather for one day to discuss pressing issues. This is the fourth meeting of the European political community, an idea proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer

The meeting does not involve making joint decisions, but it creates an excellent opportunity to discuss the vulnerabilities of the modern European order.

Return of Great Britain

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is using this moment to demonstrate the return of Great Britain to the role of a key participant in the European concert, as it was in centuries past. The meeting place, Blenheim, plays an important role in the country’s history, as the land and funds for the palace construction were gifted to John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough, for his leadership in the Battle of Blenheim in 1704.

Historical Significance

Although the British traditionally commemorate this battle as a significant victory over the French, it was actually a battle near Blenheim, where British, Dutch, German, Austrian, and Danish forces united against the French and Bavarians, repelling their attack.

Important Discussions

Today, as back then, the highest positions in Europe are being discussed at the meeting. While the possibility of Ursula von der Leyen being reappointed as President of the European Commission is currently under consideration after a peaceful vote in the European Parliament, at the beginning of the 18th century, the question of the Spanish throne inheritance was decided by war.

Churchill’s Legacy

During the meeting at Blenheim Palace, the British hosts will also present to their continental guests a modest bedroom where Winston Churchill was born in 1874. This Churchill was a crucial figure in liberating Europe from Nazism in 1945 and became an active supporter of a united Europe based on peaceful coexistence between France and Germany.

Rebooting Relations with EU

Therefore, for Keir Starmer, the ideal moment and place have arrived to continue the «reboot» of relations with the European Union, actively supported by his government. In a previous statement, he noted: «We must do more and go further… so that our future generations can proudly assess the achievements of our continent together.»
