Contemporary Duel festival of modern dance at Kiev Opera
The Contemporary Duel festival of modern dance will take place at the Kiev Opera on June 2, bringing together Ukrainian choreographers and performers on one stage for the first time since the full-scale war. This was reported by the organizers.
Reimagining dance in Ukraine
The festival, which once started as battles, gathering the most experienced dancers, is now taking it to a new level, offering the audience a program of the freshest dance shows. «The past two years have forced us to rethink many things, and this is reflected in art. We are organizing the festival right now to showcase the diversity of contemporary dance in Ukraine,» says co-organizer Contemporary Duel, dancer Danilo Zubkov.
10th anniversary edition at Kiev Opera
The 10th anniversary edition of Contemporary Duel at the Kiev Opera will be special. The founder of the festival, choreographer Halyna Pekha, explains that the idea of the festival came from the concept of hip-hop battles, where dancers demonstrate their improvisational skills. «We started this project with the goal of creating a platform where dancers could feel free and express everything that is important to them,» adds Halyna.
The program includes competitions in different nominations in the round hall of the Kiev Opera and a gala evening of short shows by Ukrainian choreographers on the main stage of the theater. Audiences can buy tickets for both blocks of events or for individual shows.
Celebrating life through dance
«Contemporary dance is an integral part of culture and art, and we want as many people as possible to learn about the achievements of our artists. Although organizing a festival in times of war is a challenge, we plan to celebrate life and invite the audience to share this celebration with us,» says Halyna Pekha.
