Former National-Conservative government of Poland was hostile towards Germany. However, with the arrival of a left-centrist coalition in December 2023, which changed the government in Poland after eight years, Warsaw and Berlin have decided to reset their relations.
«Germany is not an enemy, but an ally» — this principle is now being emphasized in the speeches of the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski, who highlights a decisive shift in Warsaw’s policy towards its western neighbor.
These new approaches have already led to joint intergovernmental consultations in Warsaw, where German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his ministers will meet on Tuesday, July 2.
Instead of anti-German rhetoric, which often led to tense relations, the new Polish government proposes a pragmatic approach to resolving contentious issues with Germany. The leader of the liberal «Civic Platform» Donald Tusk has become a symbol of this new stage in the relations between the neighboring states.
