Sanctions against leaders of organized smuggling have been extended for three years by the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, which was approved by President Volodymyr Zelensky, reports the correspondent of «Dumska».

Among the individuals who remain under sanctions is Odessa businessman Vadym Alperin, known in the media as the «king of smuggling».

The sanctions include a ban on conducting trade operations, restrictions on resource transit, as well as asset blocking and a ban on capital export from Ukraine and activities on its territory.

Alperin was stripped of his Ukrainian citizenship in April 2021, and his attempt to reclaim it through the courts is currently ongoing.

In November 2019, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested him after he attempted to bribe the head of the NABU with $800,000.

The investigation included smuggling goods worth over 200 million hryvnias. A few days after his arrest, he managed to post bail of 70 million hryvnias and leave the country.

The Supreme Anti-Corruption Court closed the case in October 2023 due to procedural violations.

Alperin is also known as the owner of the ship «Faina», which was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2008 with a cargo of military equipment, including 33 T-72 tanks.
